BIOINFORMATICIAN, IT Systems Manager

BACKGROUND:
The postholder will act as the Bioinformatician – IT Systems Manager for the Inflammatory Arthritis Centre, Musculoskeletal Clinical Academic Unit, Barts and the London NHS Trust and will contribute to the overall scientific endeavour of the Centre for Experimental Medicine & Rheumatology within William Harvey Research Institute in order to increase the quality and standing of research of the Institution as a whole.  The candidate will be primarily based at the Inflammatory Arthritis Centre in Mile End, but there may be occasional need to visit other sites across the campus in the course of the work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will be expected to design genotypic and phenotypic databases and address bioinformatics and statistical needs related to the design and analysis of genome wide studies. The successful candidate will additionally contribute to the wider development and extension of bioinformatics software tools within the institute.

REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants should have a degree in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology (or related degree with experience). In addition the applicant should have a solid understanding of the analysis of high throughput technologies, a comprehensive working knowledge of common bioinformatics tools and relevant statistical algorithms, and demonstrate the ability to apply that knowledge to help unravel the molecular basis of a disease.

It is also essential that the candidate has clear communication skills, with the ability to present methodologies and results succinctly and to provide advice, training and support for researchers. 

PREFERENCES:
Experience of languages such as perl, php, R is essential and additional languages, e.g. Java or C, would be desirable. Familiarity with Linux network/server administration and web application development technologies will be an essential, as is proficiency in the use of relational databases, in particular MySQL. Experience in molecular biology and genetics research is desirable.

TERMS: 5 year fixed term contract

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Professional Grade 5, 33,392 - 36,330 GBP per annum
