BACKGROUND:The Bioinformatics and Research Computing Department supports and collaborates with Whitehead scientists working in the nearly twenty research laboratories. We are looking for a bioinformatics scientist with expertise in such areas as genomics, proteomics, sequence analysis, gene expression, high-throughput analyses, and image analysis to collaborate with our scientists and build tools. This position provides an opportunity to work on many different scientific and computational projects with Institute researchers. In addition, the person is expected to prepare and present Bioinformatics talks for Whitehead scientists.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with and support Whitehead scientists and build tools in the areas of sequence, microarray and structural analysis, genomics, gene expression, high-throughput analyses, and image analysis.
- Assist with the design and development of bioinformatics-related programming projects.- Identify or develop software and tools to analyze and manage biological data.
- Instruct scientists in the use of the best and latest bioinformatics tools available.
- Prepare and teach classes, courses and/or demonstrations on the use of various techniques and software tools.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Ph.D. in biology or related discipline required.
- A minimum of two years of bioinformatics/computational biology experience or the equivalent.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be flexible and demonstrate good skills in instruction and training.
- Background in programming (eg. Perl, BioPerl, Java, R, MySQL) in a UNIX environment.
- Must be able to work well independently and with all levels of Institute researchers.
